President of the Strategic Research Center of Iran’s Expediency Council, Dr. Ali Akbar Velayati, described the ties between Iran and China as age-old and strategic, saying the two can naturally develop cooperation at different levels.
He made the remarks in a meeting with the special envoy of Chinese government on Syrian affairs, Xie Xiaoyan and his accompanying delegation in Tehran on Saturday, July 22, adding that the bilateral ties have always been growing.
Regional cooperation between Tehran and Beijing should also grow in accordance with the two sides’ status, he said, referring to the issue of Syria as an important area where there is a lot of potential for Iran-China cooperation.
He appreciated China’s stances on Syria and the region and said Tehran counts on Beijing’s cooperation in these areas.
"Iran’s principled policy since the beginning has been supporting the legitimate government and people of Syria and opposing any attempts aimed at partitioning or weakening not only Syria but all other regional countries,” he stressed.
Dr. Velayati further referred to the so-called international coalition led by the US and some reactionary regional countries as one whose measures are in line with boosting terrorist groups.
Thanks to the resistance against the terrorists, he said, the process of splitting up Syria has been reversed and now the legitimate government and nation of Syria are much more powerful than before and the US-led coalition will not achieve its objectives in the Arab country, he went on to say.
Xie Xiaoyan, for his part, thanked Dr. Velayati and described him as a senior figure in Iran’s foreign affairs and a longtime and close friend of China.
He underlined that Iran and China share common views in many regional and international issues, hoping that his visit to Tehran will lead to enhanced ties between the two countries.
Xiaoyan also stressed that Beijing is opposed to partition of Syria, calling for real fight against terrorism by all countries.
He added that certain countries’ interference in Syria’s affairs would only exacerbate the crisis in the Arab country and strengthen the terrorists.
Dr. Velayati and the Chinese official attended a joint press conference after the meeting.
