Abstract
US security approach to the Middle East in recent years has been gradually shifting from the past military views to idealism. Washington’s viewpoints on various Middle Eastern issues ranging from abandoned Palestinian-Israeli peace process to expansion of educational, trade, commercial, scientific and technological relations with regional states and the United States reaction to unrests in the Arab world prove that Obama’s approach to regional issues is totally different from his predecessors. Multilateralism is the main characteristic of his approach. Changes in US security approach, more attention to multilateralism and Obama’s endeavors to terminate US military presence in Afghanistan will tend to offer Iran opportunities to increase its regional role. They will also encourage Washington to seek areas of convergence with Iran to maintain regional peace and stability.
